WHO WE ARE
Established in 1977, The EEGO Foundation is one of the largest, best organized, all-volunteer, membership and community-based non-profit human rights organizations in the country. It is the proud voice of the LGBT community on the East End of Long Island, paving the way for its members to gain equal rights through educational, communication, advocacy, health and cultural programs.
OUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Here are some highlights from The EEGO Foundation’s more than a quarter century of history, accomplishments which demonstrate the power of community, how people who believe deeply in the ideal of equality and justice can work together and influence others:
- Protested successfully against the exclusion of gay men and women from Fowler Beach in Southampton.
- Demonstrated our commitment to human rights by maintaining an open dialogue with local politicians to insure our community’s issues remain visible and pertinent.
- Sponsored annual workshops, outreach, and cultural forums, celebrating well-known writers, artists, medical professionals, entertainers, and activists and held at such places as Bay Street Theatre, Guild Hall, the Benson Gallery, Southampton College, Bridge Gardens Trust, and Ashawagh Hall .
- Led the way for the creation of local registries so that our community may declare its relationships and take advantage of the growing opportunities provided to domestic partners.
- Established a scholarship program for gay minority students.
- Organized on-going social events for members including dinner dances, theatre parties, family outings, beach picnics, fishing trips, cabaret performances, and cocktail parties.
- Initiated participation as an active member of both the Anti-Bias Task Forces of Southampton and of East Hampton.
- Encouraged local businesses to participate with us through the unique Business Partner Program which offers advertising and patronage opportunities with our over 500 EEGO members.
- Supported other worthy social service and human rights East End organizations through annual grants.
